Trailer servicing in Colac

A bearing that's started to whine, brakes that don't bite like they used to, or a trailer that hasn't been looked at since the last move. Whatever's brought you here, Callahan Vehicle Maintenance is a family-owned workshop at 44 Hugh Murray Drive in Colac, and Bernard Callahan has been in the trade for 37 years. We're a VACC member workshop, and we keep trailers safe and road-ready.

We service the trailers people around here actually run, from box and car trailers to horse floats and boat trailers.

What trailer servicing at Callahan covers

Trailer servicing is the running gear and the roadworthy basics: the parts that keep the trailer tracking straight, stopping properly, and legal to tow. Here's what we handle:
  • Wheel bearings – inspect, pack, and replace.
  • Brakes – electric, override, and mechanical.
  • Suspension and springs – shackles, bushes, leaf springs, and shockers.
  • Lights and wiring – the most common reason a trailer fails a roadworthy.
  • Couplings and hitch hardware – tow couplings, safety chains, and D-shackles.
  • Chassis inspection and pre-trip or pre-job checks.
We cover box trailers, car trailers, tradesman trailers, horse floats, boat trailers, and light commercial and farm trailers where the work suits the workshop. What's outside our scope is the heavy end: large semi-trailers, B-doubles, and specialised heavy commercial trailers are dealer or specialist work, and we'll tell you straight if your trailer falls into that bracket.

Wheel bearings, brakes, lights, and trailer roadworthy

A few items come up again and again, and most are the difference between a tow that goes to plan and one that doesn't.

Wheel bearings need regular attention, usually once a year or before any long tow. Lights and wiring are the most common roadworthy fail point on trailers, so they're worth checking before they let you down. On brakes, Victorian rules require brakes on trailers over 750kg ATM, and breakaway brakes over 2,000kg ATM; we'll check what applies to your trailer, and VicRoads has the detail on the regulations.

If you're selling or re-registering, Victoria requires a roadworthy on most trailers. We can get yours ready for inspection by sorting the bearings, brakes, lights, and wiring that usually need attention. Bernard holds Licensed Vehicle Tester accreditation (EX12159) for Victorian roadworthy work, so call us to confirm what your trailer needs. Weight ratings matter too, so know your trailer's ATM, GTM, Tare, and ball weight before you load up.

One workshop for your trailer and your tow vehicle

The advantage of a workshop like ours is that we look after both ends of the rig. Bernard has 37 years in the trade, and his technicians bring decades more between them. Because the same crew that services your car, ute, or 4WD can service the trailer behind it, the whole rig stays road-ready as one unit.

We're honest about scope, too. Small-to-medium trailers, yes; the heavy commercial gear, no. If a job isn't right for us, we'll say so.

Common Questions About Trailer Servicing

As a general guide, once a year or before any long tow, whichever comes first. Trailers that sit unused for long stretches or get used near saltwater (boat trailers especially) are worth checking more often. Bearings are a cheap fix; a seized hub on the highway is not.

Yes. We service electric, override, and mechanical trailer brakes, and we can check brake controller integration with your tow vehicle so everything works together.

We can prepare your trailer for a roadworthy inspection, getting the bearings, brakes, lights, and wiring right. Bernard holds Licensed Vehicle Tester accreditation (EX12159), so call us to confirm exactly what your trailer needs.
