Car servicing in Colac

Most people don't want a lesson in the difference between a minor service, a major service, and a log book service. They want their car looked after by someone who knows what they're doing, at a fair price, close to home. That's the job at Callahan Vehicle Maintenance, a family-owned, VACC member workshop at 44 Hugh Murray Drive in Colac, where Bernard Callahan has 37 years in the trade.

Basic service, fuller one, or an inspection-and-fix because something's not right: we work out what the car needs and explain it before any work goes ahead.

What a general car service at Callahan covers

A general service is an inspection-and-service: we go through the car, sort what needs sorting, and flag anything coming up. It's not tied to a manufacturer's schedule the way log book servicing is. A typical service covers:
  • Engine oil and filter change
  • Fluid checks (brake, coolant, power steering, washer)
  • Brake system, tyre, and wheel inspection
  • Battery and charging system check
  • Belts, hoses, lights, and wipers
  • Underbody and exhaust inspection, plus a test drive where it helps
How far a service goes depends on the car and how it's been used. A minor service is the regular keep-it-healthy job; a major service goes deeper into the wear items that come due less often; an inspection-and-fix is for when something's playing up. Either way, you're told what needs doing now and what can wait.

General service or log book service

This is the question that trips people up, so here's the plain version. A log book service is manufacturer-spec scheduled servicing, recorded in the log book, and it matters most for cars still under manufacturer warranty. A general service isn't tied to that schedule, which suits older cars, out-of-warranty cars, and anyone who just wants their vehicle maintained properly.

On warranty, the part worth knowing: under Australian Consumer Law, servicing at an independent workshop does not void your manufacturer warranty, provided the service is performed correctly and using appropriate parts. If your car does need the manufacturer-spec route, that's our log book service. Not sure which you need? Call us and Bernard will point you to the right one.

One workshop for servicing and the specialist work

Most cars do well on a service once a year or every 10,000 to 15,000km, whichever comes first, and harder-working vehicles sooner.

The advantage of bringing your car to us is that it's one workshop for the lot. Bernard has 37 years in the trade and his technicians bring decades more between them, and we're a VACC member workshop with ARCtick (AU48457) accreditation for air conditioning and Licensed Vehicle Tester (EX12159) accreditation for roadworthy inspections. The same place that services your car also handles the brakes, AC, cooling, electrical, and suspension. We work on all makes and models, from Holden, Ford, Toyota, Subaru, and Nissan through to Audi, Mercedes, and Volvo, across petrol, diesel, LPG, electric, and hybrid.

Common questions about car servicing

A log book service follows the manufacturer's set schedule and is recorded in the log book, which matters most while your car is under warranty. A general service isn't tied to that schedule and suits older or out-of-warranty cars. Not sure which you need? Give us a call.

As a general guide, once a year or every 10,000 to 15,000km, whichever comes first. Work vehicles, farm utes, and cars doing heavy regional kilometres benefit from more frequent servicing because they wear faster.

No. Under Australian Consumer Law, servicing at an independent workshop does not void your manufacturer warranty, provided the service is performed correctly and using appropriate parts. We use appropriate parts and keep proper records.

A courtesy or loan car is available subject to availability, and we can arrange a drop-off home. Mention it when you book so we can line it up.
