Motorhome servicing in Colac

If your motorhome is due for a service, has thrown a fault on the way through Colac, or needs a check before a long trip, Callahan Vehicle Maintenance can take care of the chassis and mechanical side. We have been running this workshop at 44 Hugh Murray Drive in Colac since 2012, and motorhome servicing fits naturally into the mix of fleet, light commercial, and diesel work the business already handles day to day.

The work covers the chassis side of the vehicle. Engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, cooling, auto electrical, air conditioning (we hold ARCtick AU48457), and the chassis and house electrical systems. The gas, plumbing, and fit-out side belongs with a dedicated RV specialist, and we are upfront about that

What motorhome servicing at Callahan covers

Motorhome servicing is, at its heart, servicing the vehicle's chassis and the electrical systems that keep it usable on the road. Most modern motorhomes are built on a light commercial van or light truck platform with the camper body bolted on top, which means the mechanical work is essentially the same as servicing the equivalent commercial vehicle. The workshop handles that across petrol, diesel, LPG, and hybrid configurations.

The work covered includes scheduled log book servicing, engine and transmission work, brake repairs and inspections (motorhomes work their brakes harder than cars do, especially on Otway descents under load), cooling system work for under-load and uphill stress, suspension and steering checks for load-related wear, auto electrical and diagnostics on the chassis side, house batteries and 12V and 240V electrical, ARCtick-licensed air conditioning service, tow bar fitting and weight ratings to ADR compliance, and pre-trip and post-trip mechanical checks before and after a long touring run.

What we don't do on a motorhome

There are a few things we do not take on at the workshop, and we would rather say so than push the boundaries of our trade.

Gas appliances and gas line work need a Type B gas fitting licence, which we do not hold. RV-side items like fridges, awnings, roof sealants, interior fit-out, and solar system fitting all sit with a dedicated RV service centre. If that is what you need, we can usually point you towards someone who handles it. Being clear about the scope means you are not paying us to learn something we do not do every day, and you get the right person on the right work.

Motorhome servicing for travellers and for local owners

Colac sits on the Princes Highway between Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road, right at the natural breakpoint for motorhomes making the run from the city out to Apollo Bay, Lorne, Port Campbell and the Twelve Apostles. A planned mechanical stop in Colac for a scheduled service, a fault check, or AC work is often more straightforward than turning back to Melbourne or pushing on with a problem. Phone ahead, bring service history if you have it, and Bernard will work out the best approach based on how urgent the trip is and what the vehicle is doing.

Motorhome owners around Colac, Elliminyt, Yeodene, Warncoort, Irrewarra and the wider Otway region do not need to drive to Geelong or further to get chassis and electrical work done. The workshop has the trade depth, the equipment, the ARCtick AU48457 licence for air conditioning, and the experience with light commercial chassis to handle scheduled servicing and chassis repairs locally.

Why motorhome owners and travellers choose Callahan

Bernard Callahan has 37 years in the trade. Senior mechanic Gary Greene has 38 years of dealership background across Ford, Holden, Subaru and Nissan. That is 75 years of combined experience between the two of them on the workshop floor, before you add the rest of the team.

The workshop is a VACC member, holds ARCtick AU48457 for air conditioning work, and operates as a Licensed Vehicle Tester (LVT EX12159) for Victorian Roadworthy Certificates. We are an authorised repairer for eleven fleet management partners and a direct fleet workshop for Powercor Colac, which means our scheduling, parts handling and reporting are built to commercial workshop standards. Motorhomes, especially those built on light commercial chassis, sit comfortably inside that scope.

Pre-trip and post-trip checks are part of every motorhome service we book. Before a long touring run, the focus is on tyres, brakes, cooling, batteries (both chassis and the house side), AC, lights, suspension under load, and towing setup. Catching wear before a long trip is cheaper and safer than discovering it on a Sunday afternoon at Apollo Bay.

Under Australian Consumer Law, servicing at an independent workshop does not void your manufacturer warranty, provided the service is performed correctly and using appropriate parts.

Common Questions About Motorhome Servicing

Yes. Fiat Ducato is the most common motorhome chassis in Australia, and we service them as part of our general light commercial work. The same applies to Iveco Daily, Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit, Mitsubishi Canter and similar platforms. If you are not sure what your motorhome is built on, phone us with the model and year and we can confirm.

Yes, the cab air conditioning. The workshop holds ARCtick licence AU48457, which is what is required for handling refrigerant gas legally in Australia. If the AC has stopped working, lost cooling, or is due a regas, phone the workshop and we will book it in. House-side AC (the unit cooling the camper area) is usually a separate question and may sit with an RV specialist depending on what has been fitted.

No. Gas line and gas appliance work needs a Type B gas fitting licence. Plumbing, fridge servicing, awnings and interior fit-out also sit with a dedicated RV service centre. We can usually point you to someone who does that work if you need a referral.

The interval is set by the chassis manufacturer (Fiat, Iveco, Mercedes, Ford and others), not by the motorhome converter. Manufacturer intervals on the kilometre side can be long, but motorhomes should still be serviced at least yearly because seals, fluids and batteries deteriorate with age regardless of how many kilometres are on the clock. If the motorhome sits for long periods between trips, time-based servicing matters more than distance. Phone us with your chassis make, model and year and we will confirm the recommended interval for your vehicle.

Often, yes. Colac is on the Princes Highway and the natural breakpoint for motorhomes heading to or from the Great Ocean Road. Phone ahead on 0419 871 591 with what you need and when you are passing through, and Bernard will work out whether we can book you in for a service, a fault check, or a quick look while you continue the trip.
