Car batteries in Colac

If your car wouldn't start this morning, the battery has been cranking slower for a few weeks, or you've spotted a warning light on the dash, it's time for a battery check. Callahan Vehicle Maintenance fits car batteries at 44 Hugh Murray Drive, Colac.
A flat battery is not always a battery problem. Sometimes it's the alternator, a parasitic drain, or a corroded terminal. We test the whole system first, then fit the right battery when the battery is the answer.
Bernard Callahan and the team supply Bond Batteries across cars, 4WDs, work utes, light commercial, and fleet vehicles.

Signs your car battery may need replacing

Most car batteries in Victorian conditions last three to five years. The common warning signs are slow cranking when you turn the key, a battery warning light on the dash, headlights or dash lights that dim noticeably at idle, needing a second or third jump start within a few weeks, or a swollen battery casing with white or green corrosion on the terminals.

Cold mornings make every weakness show up first. If your battery is past three or four years old, it's worth a check even without symptoms. A 15-minute test at the workshop costs less than a flat car at a job site or on the highway.

We test first, then recommend

A proper battery check covers more than reading the voltage. The workshop test goes through the battery itself, the charging system, and the rest of the starting circuit. We measure voltage with the engine off and running, run a load test under cranking conditions, check alternator output, look for parasitic draw with the ignition off, and inspect the terminals and earth.

If the test shows the battery is the problem, we fit a replacement. If it points at the alternator, the wiring, or a circuit drawing current with the ignition off, that is auto electrical work, and the diagnostic is the start of the job rather than the end. See our auto electrical and diagnostics page for the broader picture.

Bond Batteries fitted at Callahan

Callahan fits Bond Batteries as the default option for most vehicles. Bond is a Victorian family-owned battery company that started in Ballarat in 1976 and is still family-owned and operated. Their range covers cars, 4WDs, commercial, agricultural, motorcycle, marine, and leisure use. The Bond Ultimate is the premium option, built on silver calcium plate chemistry for longer service life and stronger cranking.

Common questions about car batteries

Most car batteries last three to five years in Victorian conditions. Heat, cold, accessory load, and the way the vehicle is driven all change that. A battery that has done four winters of regional driving is in its replacement window even if it still starts the car.

Yes. A battery test is a short workshop job, and we would rather check the battery, charging system, and connections than sell a new battery for a fault that is somewhere else. If the test confirms the battery is the problem, we replace it. If not, we tell you what is causing the trouble.

An AGM battery uses sealed glass-mat construction and handles high accessory load and stop-start cycles better than a standard flooded battery. You need one if your vehicle is built around stop-start technology, has an AGM fitted from the factory, or runs heavy accessories like a 4WD fridge or auxiliary lighting. For most older petrol and diesel cars, a standard battery is still the right call.

No. A new battery fixes problems caused by a worn-out battery. If the alternator is not charging, if something is drawing current with the ignition off, or if a terminal connection is poor, a new battery will go flat the same way the old one did. That is why we test the whole system before fitting.

Yes. We fit starting and auxiliary batteries on 4WDs, including dual-battery setups, and we service work utes, vans, light commercial, and fleet vehicles. Callahan is an authorised repairer for 11 fleet management partners and works directly with Powercor Colac on their local fleet.
